Separation and Connection

Separation and Connection form the fundamental arcs of living and relating. Human beings are shaped by these experiences from the very beginning, and continue to live them in a variety ways through the journey of life. Staring with the process of birthing, to early familial life, to relationships with siblings and friends, to work and romantic lives, and to our link with the environment and physical spaces – we experience separation and connection in different forms across all these dimensions of being and relating. There is an ebb and flow of these states and processes, as we negotiate the despair of loss and the joys of feeling held and understood, in relation with significant others.

Through this event, we invite an engagement with the psychic negotiation between the feelings of “separateness” and “connectedness”, and the complex and sometimes difficult space that lies between the two. We wonder – Does one state exist without the other’ Does the mind begin with a connection or with a separation? How does an individual’s unique mental structure develop? How do our relational styles and needs come to be? In what manner do separations shape our connections, and in what ways do our connections facilitate the way we meet with separation? How does the nature of our separations shape our ability to trust, receive and feel gratitude? Whom can we form a connection with; and with whom must we keep a separation? A range of such questions come to mind.

The vicissitudes of these dynamics come alive in the consulting room as we join our patients in their journey of self-exploration and in the sharing of their inner worlds. With the meeting and parting of each session, these fundamental experiences emerge and show themselves in the present. The impact of separation at the end of a session or a break can stir up an analysand’s past difficulties. In the analytic setting, the presence of the analyst, a new object that seeks to understand and contain, there is an opportunity for a new type of inner connection. In doing so, the analytic encounter offers us a chance at engagement and transformation. As we travel along, we discover that the movements within this world are ever unfolding, nebulous forms that await our understanding, and while each person brings their unique form to these dynamics, the experiences themselves are lived by us all.

The theme for the IPSO India event is Separation and Connection. Through this, we hope to open up these universal experiences as they are brought alive in the consulting room, as we search through the darkness, against the pressure of defences. We hope to be able to observe through clinical work and life experience, the various unique forms in which these states and negotiations are brought forth, and the challenges that they pose, to better understand, learn and grow in the work that we do.

Material Guidelines

Do send in a case in analysis of 2 or more sessions weekly. It would be helpful to have described in the background, the patient’s age, description, the reason for coming for help; as well as information on childhood, family life and relationships. What will then be needed is one analytic session, written in a dialogue format.
Some descriptions of thoughts and counter-transference experiences could also be helpful. Itshould take approximately 20 minutes to read both the background and the session.
