We are very pleased to invite you to participate in our next IPSO European Meeting which is going to take place in Madrid Spain, in person. The date is set for the weekend of 21, 22 and 23 October. Our theme of discussion is “The Paternal Function” in our current psychoanalytical clinical and theoretical understanding and we have now opened applications for your proposals. Deadline to receive proposals is 20 August 2022.

Freud introduced the concept of the paternal function describing the Oedipus complex; where the father forbids the fusion between mother and infant that goes on for too long, adopting the position of the “third”, opening the transition from the natural to the social order. The impact of the paternal function does not rely on the duration nor type of the physical presence of the father, but rather on his position. He represents the Law. The paternal function can be performed by different institutions or persons, not only necessarily the father himself. Some argue, that even by the mother herself, as long as it exists in a proper and correct way in her own mind. So, not
the actual concrete “Third”, but rather the symbolic Father is crucial in the healthy development of the child.

With this in mind, it is important for us to bring different considerations and approaches to the theme:

  • Paternal function and triadic function and the Paternal third as a an element of separation.
  • Oedipus and paternal function: The father in the oedipal complex.
  • Paternal function and gender identity.
  • Paternal function, identification and object investment – the Father figure.
  • Imaginary father vs real father.
  • Trauma and paternal function.

Please send your proposals to the following email address: ipsomadridinfo@gmail.com. We are looking forward to the interesting discussions and a rich gathering of like-minded professionals!
